This is what we offer at Piermont Chess:

Casual Chess

Casual chess is our most popular activity. Anyone can stop by and play! We’re here from 10-2 every Saturday. Arrive at any time, and stay as long as you want. If you are new, don’t be shy, come on in and we will help you get settled in to a game right away.

We provide all the chess equipment (though you can bring your own, of course). We also have water & coffee, and there are usually snacks and a chess event on TV. The building is also handicap accessible!

There is no mandatory membership fee, no age limit, & no experience requirement. Someone is always willing to play a game regardless of skill level. Here, everyone is expected, even obligated, to contribute to a positive experience for all.

USCF Rated Tournaments

Piermont Chess is a great place to begin, or continue, your competitive chess career! The atmosphere is very friendly and supportive, and the ideal place to play especially if you’ve never tried it before.

We take great pride in our official US Chess Federation rated tournaments! They are competitive events where players vie for national rating points and prizes. All tournaments are open to the public and all ages and skill levels unless otherwise noted (we’ve hosted beginners and masters alike). Visit the calendar for upcoming events and register online.

Although these events are taken a bit more seriously, you can still expect good sportsmanship because we consider that the most important factor. We try very hard to dispel the idea of the pretentious and intimidating chess club most people expect. Everyone should have a good time and feel respected at all times.

NOTE: All Tournament Directors are USCF certified and trained in SafeSport practices as required by state law, federal law, and USCF policies.

Active USCF membership is required for participation & there are modest registration fees required to play.

See our tournament guidelines for some FAQ about how tournaments work specifically at Piermont Chess.

Unrated Tournaments

Unrated tournaments follow all the same rules and procedures, but are less competitive and geared towards inexperienced players, but all are welcome. They are very popular and a great way to experience competitive chess..

We provide sets, clocks, pencils and notation score sheets just like we do for rated tournaments.

If you’re curious, come try it out! We get lots of positive feedback. Check the calendar for the next one and register online!

Lessons

We offer in-person chess lessons for beginner and intermediate players. These individual one-on-one lessons take place during casual chess sessions.

Contact us to discuss rates and availability based on your needs.

If you’re looking for more advanced training or a professional coach, we can connect you with some excellent chess teachers if we can’t help you ourselves. Also take a look at our resources page for interesting online tools.
